President Truman and Tallulah Bankhead shared a long friendship together. Once, during an Inaugural Parade, each Governors’ car slowed down near the President so they could show the President their respect. When South Carolina Governor, Strom Thurmond, (who had opposed the Civil Rights movement) passed the President, Truman refused to acknowledge him. Tallulah Bankhead, who was viewing the parade behind the Supreme Court, stood up between the dignified ladies with their silk hats and proceeded to loudly boo the Governor, until his car disappeared from sight. First Lady Bess Truman said in a loud whisper to friends seated beside her, “I wish I had the courage to do that.”
